10/13/08 - My leg

In mid September, I injured my lower left leg/ankle in a cross country race, and I've been out of all sports and gym class since. I limp around like a cripple, and at first my leg was swollen to almost twice its normal size. The swelling has gone down since then, but it's still a little swollen.

When I went to the closest urgent care center that Saturday afternoon, they glanced at me, took a few x-rays, gave me an air cast, and told me I had strained an extensor muscle.

When I went to my local doctor for a second opinion the next Tuesday, he told me the people at the urgent care center were idiots, that they had x-rayed the wrong area, and that I had either a stress fracture or most likely, tendinitis. He then pulled some strings and got me into the nearby physical therapy place that same day.

However, it's now a month later, and my leg is still not getting better. The physical therapist terminated my treatment indefinitely because I wasn't responding and ordered a bone scan to check on the possibility that it might be a stress fracture after all.

That brings us to the present time. My bone scan is tomorrow morning at 9. If it shows up that I do have a stress fracture, I'm out of commission until at least December. If it isn't a stress fracture (unless they come up with some new diagnosis), then it must just be a slow healing tendinitis, which would still give me a very very slim chance of making it back for sectionals (the last meet of the season and the last meet of my high school cross country career).

But even if I can run in sectionals, I won't be in very good shape from being out for so long. I've been lifting in the weight room after school in an attempt to stay active, but there's no way I can reproduce the shape I would be in if I were still running 6-7 miles a day. Oh well, there are worse things in life. Just please keep me in your prayers and hope that it's nothing super serious. Thanks.
